Pours a dark brown that is so dark that it is just on the edge of being black. The pour produces a thin dark tan head that quickly dissipates and becomes a ring of foam around the edges of the glass. Very little, if any lacing.
The aroma is very dark and rich with roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate and a hint of molasses and smoke.
The taste is deep dark and rich, just like the aroma hinted at. A creamy dark cocoa and coffee with a roasted bitter sweet flavor start things off. The rye and whisky blends into the flavors near the middle with a dark fruit and molasses near the end. The finish is fairly dry with a citrus acidity hops, and some smokiness.
Big body with light to medium carbonation. Creamy smooth mouthfeel with a sweetness on the lips. A touch of alcohol is noticeable in the aftertaste.
Overall, an impressive beer. The dark rich flavors melt in your mouth with an almost candy like appeal. Very well balanced with a very drinkable creamy smoothness that matches that flavors perfectly. This makes for a great cold night beer. If you are a stout or porter drinker, this one will be right up your alley. Put this beer on your must try list! It's a winner!
Pours opaque with a brown, 1.5 inch foam that is somewhat creamy. Retention is fair while the lacing begins immediately and is thick and sticky.
Aroma is adequate, a pleasant combination light aromas of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt. Almost seems creamy but there isn't any whiskey. Some dark juicy fruits peek through along with some slight alcohol later on.
Taste: fantastic. Chocolate, roasted, and coffee malt are there and have their rolls while the whiskey and rye add to the finish: nice whiskey alcohol to let it's presence be none and some rye spice that has some staying power. The middle does have a dark fruit (prune) aspect.
Big body attached to at least a medium carbonation. Nice creaminess on the lips as you sip the beer.
This is a home run in my book. Nice and complex with the malts mixing with the rye whiskey. I could drink this over and over again. I have one regret: I only had one of them. Enjoy!
Aroma: Rich, deep, sweet, slightly smoky scent. I'll admit that I'm influenced by the whiskey barrel aging notation on the label, but a cool riff of aroma's is obviously rooted in that part of this brews DNA.
1st Taste: Love it. Definately complex, but all everything is in balance. Starts with vanilla sweet, a touch of coffee, a hint of cococa, a little chared wood, there a whole bunch going on here.
Overall: This little brewery in Wisconsin doesn't get the credit it deserves. This brew has a ton a elments to it and yet it's all comes together. Adding rye grains is always a trick, cause not everybody likes the taste...yet here it adds another level. With some brews that are aged in bourban barrels, that aspect exerts undue influence. Here it doesn't, probably the sightful move by the brewers to use blend this brew with 40% of the mix being aged. At the end this brew has this beautiful creamy feel. There's a prescence of alcohol, but again it's just one of the contributing characteristics that add to the total but don't overwhelm. This is a super star brew like FFF's Dark Lord or Founders KSB, but it's a utililty players that any brewer would be proud to have in their lineup. I suggest you try and find this brew because it proves just how unique american brews can be. And, it proves the upper mid-west is creating it's signature style with whiskey barrel aging stouts/porters.
