Fire, Skulls & Money

Toppling Goliath Brewing Company

American IPA

Pours cloudy. Huge white, frothy foam covers, quickly yielding, settling to a wispy thin over that produces sporadic lacing. Aroma of mango and resin. Other tropical aromas hit the senses but ripe mango is up front and bold. As the beer breaths, this gives way to a huge resinous profile. Some citrus. Candy sweetness. Taste adds sweetness which lingers to the finish, lasting. Mango, citrus and resin round out the hop profile. Candy sweetness is tough, big. Somewhat effervescent. Surpri...read more

Beverage of Champions

Solemn Oath Brewery

Milk/Sweet/Cream Sout

8.2 by scot have another Beverage of Champions by Solemn Oath Brewery

Free beer given to Chuck, Pat and myself at Jimmy’s after Pat’s baby shower. Pours opaque. Minimal mocha head. Fleeting head. Glass could have something to do with this. Aroma is sweet. Orange and bourbon mingle to give thought of tequila. Strange yet awesome. Taste is similar to the nose. The finish brings bourbon, brown sugar with a lingering sweetness. Medium if not bigger body. Medium carbonation. Sweetness keeps the mouth oily and slick. An interesting beer. I would ha...read more

Merc Machine

American Imperial IPA

Had on tap with Rich and Chuck at Jimmy’s in Naperville. Pours with slightly cloudy with pure white foam. Solid retention since the tap pour tries to eliminate. Sporadic but thick, coating lacing. Aroma of tropical fruits with ample sweetness. Sweetness is more towards pure sweet; not caramel, toffee, etc. Definitely light. Maybe the tulip glass doesn’t do it justice. Taste is sweetness that lasts, lingering into the finish. Tropical fruit notes are awesome. Clean. Minimal bit...read more

Abrasive Ale

Surly Brewing Company

American Imperial IPA

8.0 by scot have another Abrasive Ale by Surly Brewing Company

Can date: 2017-10-10. A good amount of haze greats the eye upon a stern pour. White, webbed, sticky laced foam is big but quickly recedes. Lacing is sticky. Aroma is hop forward with malt only for good measure and slight balance. There is a bread element: possibly the malt and/or the yeast. Citrus and tropical fruit is the focus of the hops, pineapple being the most distinguishable. Mango. Not as aromatic as memory tried to serve. Taste follows the nose. Malt is just there but not ge...read more

Abrasive Ale

Surly Brewing Company

American Imperial IPA

8.1 by rich have another Abrasive Ale by Surly Brewing Company

A: Deep gold color with a haze but not cloudy. Fizzy and fluffy but doesn't hang around too long. A: Citrus and fruit, maybe grapefruit mixed with orange but very not scent, faint pine. A tad bready. T: Very mild alcohol, semi-sweet tropical fruits with a tang of citrus. It's has bitterness, but Warrior hop's characteristic of clean and not overpowering bitterness. P: Mediums across the board on body, carbonation, and finish. Overall: One of the early DIPA's to use Citra hops, it's not for the...read more

Coffee Stout

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

American Stout

9.5 by rich have another Coffee Stout by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

A: Deep brown with clarity, not muddy. The foam head was dark Khaki i color, and soft, average retention. S: Mocha coffee aroma right out of a high end coffee spot, very alluring to a coffee aficionado. T: Starts almost semi-sweet, but really is just dry, and zero bite from hop nor coffee, so super mellow. Very creamy feel, but not out of whack in the viscosity area. Nothing is out of balance and the flavors all taste very good to the style and to good coffee. O: A very, very good coffee st...read more

Yakima Fresh

Columbus Brewing Company

American IPA

8.9 by Matt have another Yakima Fresh by Columbus Brewing Company

Bottled 10/09. Received in trade with an Ohioan. Appearance - a goldish bronze that would be clear if it wasn't for the sea of particulates. Slight foam/lacing. Smell - hoppy scent with a citrus/pineapple dank bittersweetness that fresh hops seem to bring. Taste - maybe faded after 6 weeks in the bottle, but still well balanced-citrusy and mildly bitter. Maybe it would have slapped me harder in one and or both of those when fresher, but I ain't complaining. feel - excellent, because it's bal...read more

Holiday Haze

American IPA

9.1 by rich have another Holiday Haze by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

Part of a SN ' Seasonale 12-pack', 3-bottles in the $13.99 package cost. Packaged 9/25/17, purchased 11/17/17. A: Very fuzzy, pale gold with the appropriate hazy of a NEIPA. On the very low, light of the color spectrum. Big soft, small bubble foam head. S: Really appealing tropical fruit. Maybe mostly pineapple, then grassy and grape-fruity. T: A real tri-balance of the sweetness, hop bitter, and hop flavors. It is juicy like a NEIPA should be, but in a very mature and dry way. O: An origin...read more

Bare Bones Pilsner

German Pilsner (Pils)

7.8 by scot have another Bare Bones Pilsner by Lost Forty Brewing

Received in a trade. No date on the can. Not a huge fan of lagers and, more specifically, pilsners in general. Therefore my review may be skewed. I will do my best. Pours crystal clear with a wispy white head that is fleeting. Coating lacing that mostly recedes back to level. Reminents of said lacing a re thick and sticky. Effervescent. Aroma is grassy, mostly, and floral hops. There is a cracker/bread malt backbone that hints at sweetness. Suggestions of spice: black pepper. No sulf...read more

Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout

9.6 by Matt have another Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout by Goose Island Beer Co.

I first reviewed the 2015 version. No gusher on opening and no infection, THANKFULLY! Maple syrupy color. Coffee on the nose. Coffee and barrel on the taste. Sweet, no bitterness of coffee. Well balanced. Super tasty. Look 9 Aroma 9 Taste 10 Feel 8 Overall 9 for rating of 9.3 Above rating is for the 2013 version I had today. It's higher rated because the stronger sweet bourbon notes on the smell make up for less coffee, and it's an extremely smooth and very easily sippable barrel aged beer. T...read more

American Imperial Stout

8.4 by scot have another Bennie by Logboat Brewing Company

Canned 01/23/2017. Pours opaque. Minimal mocha foam covers. Leaves almost as quickly as it pours. Small, spotty lacing. Aroma is up on the fresh roasted black coffee. Bitter chocolate is right there as well. Sweet lactose and caramel/toffee. Taste is sweet up front: lactose, caramel and toffee. The lactose sweetness is throughout, lingering. The taste brings more chocolate but, surprisingly, pleasantly, there is a nice roastiness that helps to balance the sweetness. Coffee and coffee ...read more

Last Days of Summer

Tampa Bay Brewing Company

Fruit Beer

8.4 by Matt have another Last Days of Summer by Tampa Bay Brewing Company

It's labeled a fruited sour ale, and that's a pretty good description. It's definitely a sour, and there is a bit of fruit flavor to it. It pours a hazy golden straw color with a creamy head that quickly dissipated but has a slight amount of lacing. The smell has a funky kind of farmhouse quality to it, and there's mild fruit scent underneath. I can't quite identify what fruit it is, but there's a crispness and tartness to it. The taste, I believe, would best be described as a mildly sour fruit...read more
