Poured into a Funky Buddha snifter. Cloudy. Vigorous pour brings on a huge white foam, half the snifter. Thick, spotty lacing. Retention is short lived.

Aroma is tropical: mango with hints of pineapple.

Taste has hints of sweet but the hops are a bit subdued. Tropical.

Light mouthfeel but seems to fit the beer. Juicy but eventually dries the mouth. Little to no bitterness.

This is a great beer. Definitely needs to be fresh as all NEIPAs should be. The tropical profile is solid. The hop burps after having this beer are fantastic. Enjoy!

  • Pours cloudy as can be; no light penetrates. Minimal white foam covers. Retention follows. Surprisingly, no lacing.

Aroma has that Citra twang without being overbearing on the Citra side. Mango is most prevalent. Pineapple, grapefruit and a touch of pine round out the nose.

Taste is a bit sweet throughout. Has a tropical mango. Sounds redundant but mango usually is more earthy to me. Pineapple clenches the side of the tongue. Minimal bitterness. Lingering pine and pineapple. Pleasant.

Mouthfeel is a bit thin. Ample carbonation for the style. Dries the mouth, but slowly, not overly stiff dryness.

The hop profile is solid while keeping the bitterness minimal. Easy to drink without completely destroying the palate: not harsh, not much resin or dankness, making the beer a bit sweet. My only complaint: would like to see a bit bigger body. Enjoy!

Beer Notes
  • The First release in Old Nation’s “New Orthodox” IPA series, M-43 is designed to accentuate the deep and complex character from the combination of Calypso, Simcoe, Citra and Amarillo hops. Citrus and Tropical notes of Pineapple, Mango and Grapefruit come through in the huge, yet surprisingly delicate aroma. The flavor backs these aromas with a soft, pillowy mouthfeel. Hop bitterness is not particularly intense, which leads to a very drinkable, New England IPA even non-IPA fans love. The Haze is not from yeast, but rather from an interplay of lipids from the malted oat and oils and acids which naturally occur in the hand selected Dry hops. This beer is a perfect interplay between top grade malt and hops, MI water and brewing technique which cannot be faked.

Hops aren’t cheap, but M-43 is worth every penny!
