Shiner Kosmos Reserve

Spoetzl Brewery

American Lite Lager

"This full-flavored, hop-jacked lager..." right on the bottle. After reading this on the label, I decided that this would be the beer of the night and out of the refrigerator it emerged with me. Poured clear, single finger of white foam, little retention and really no lacing. Based on the side of the bottle I expected to smell some hops, but I detected none. Instead I had scents of malt, yeast, fruit, and a wee bit of sourness. My palate found similar flavors as my nose found aroma. Maltin...read more

3rd Anniversary Ale

Port Brewing Company

American Imperial IPA

5.0 by scot have another 3rd Anniversary Ale by Port Brewing Company

Poured cloudy with almost no foam, no retention, or lacing. Grapefruit and citrus are very strong on the nose. There is also a faint aroma of caramel sweet malt. At one time I even detected some alcohol. Loaded with grapefruit and citrus hops on the palate, maybe some caramel malt up front that makes this beer very sweet. But the sweetness quickly vanishes for the grapefruit hops that is also at the other end an unchecked. Medium mouth feel and lots o' carbonation. I don't mind carbonation in ...read more

Blackheart

English IPA

Two finger, off-white foamy head. Clear to the eye. The aroma is piney hops (more so when cold), oak, alcohol, caramel sweet malt, vanilla. All over the place adding the complexity and the appreciation of this beer. Each time I went back for another scent, there was more. Very interesting. The beer starts off with caramel/sweet malt and some vanilla and transitions to oak, finishing with alcohol. The alcohol might be too much, but seems to find its place. Big mouth feel almost creamy, no...read more

Hop Stoopid

"So Hoppy that it threatens to remove the enamel from one's teeth." That's what Lagunitas says about this beer on their site. I popped the cap and believed I was in for some hop goodness. Pours clear with multiple pours because of the height of the white, foamy head. Nice retention and spider web lacing throughout. I had to sniff the open bottle before it even made it to my glass. Oh, my nose loves the. Piney hops abound. Some sweet malt too but very light. Oh my is this some hoppy go...read more

Summer Honey

Big Sky Brewing Company

American Pale Ale

6.0 by rich have another Summer Honey by Big Sky Brewing Company

Aroma: Honey and light malt. 1st Taste: Fresh, honey, light toasty malt. Overall: It's a good honest beer from Big Sky country. Tastes clean and fresh, in my mind the influence of the glacial, mountain water used to brew this beer. I'm not sure I'm a fan of honey in brews, there's a sweetness that's close to my limit. But, it has a light touch, no fault in the after taste, and is thirst quenching. I don't think Big Sky Brewing Co has a huge distribution footprint, and this brew is a seasonal, ...read more

Poured into my favorite mason mug with a finger of white foam. Little retention and no lacing to mention. Upon my first sniff of the beer, if I was a bear I would dive into this beer as it is full of that sweet nectar called honey. Pooh bear! The aroma also has some grassy scents. Lots 'o sweet, followed by some malt and bready malt. The beer finishes with something that I can't quite put my finger on. A medium body and carbonation give it a crispness and refreshing taste. If this was t...read more

Opening the first of three bombers I got while visiting the Three Floyds bar and pub. Number four didn't make it as it exploded in the back of the van, but that story has been told. Beer pours a gold and clear, with almost no foam. No retention but the thin line did have a little bit of lacing. Nothing great. Big contingent of malt on the nose (breadiness) with some yeast. The flavor follows the aroma. More malt with sweetness and breadiness. There is also a herbal/spiciness to both the ...read more

This is my first beer from Avery and I have heard good things about their craft. I figured an anniversary issue should throw caution to the wind and come up with an good if not great beer. Enough bs, let's pour. Pours a thick, white foam that took up half the glass in height. Fair retention and a good amount of lacing throughout. Some thick and some thin. The aroma is yeast, lemon, and flowery notes. The aroma is light on the nose. There might be some fruity notes also. The taste is swe...read more

So far Harpoon beers have been average. Looking to hopefully break the trend with this beer. Pours with a lot of light, white foam. Little retention and lacing. The nose was hit with flowery and citrus hops. There was hints of sweetness. The taste is a rerun of the aroma but with a pronounced flavor of malt sweetness. The hops are there but only at the end of the taste. It finishes with some bitterness but quickly disappears. A little on the high side of maltiness for an I.P.A. A ligh...read more

Pour with a lot of head into my pint glass. Had to wait and do a second pour to finish the bottle. Retention isn't there but has a little bit of lacing. The aroma has citrus, wheat, and spice. The citrus/wheat mix is the strongest scents. Flavor has a nice, light citrus flavor with very light spiciness and some wheat. This is a really lightly flavored and scented beer. Carbonation and mouth feel are also on the light side. Not really any type of after taste either. Refreshing. Just not...read more

Pours so much white, fluffy foam, I had to pour twice to empty the twelve ounce bottle into my pint glass. Retention isn't all that great after the original foam dies down, but there is a good amount of lacing throughout. The aroma is of lemon and wheat. A quick sniff reminds me of the lemony cleaning supplies used around the house. Not meant to sound bad, just that it is a clean and refreshing scent. Taste is on the light side but is strong with lemon. The lemon is the dominate flavor and...read more

When you hear things you sometimes don't tend to believe and you think that the persons involved to something to invoke the reaction. I am talking about "gushers." Beers that when opened, due to the amount and type of bottle conditioning yeast, they explode similar to a champaign bottle. Well it happened to Ed (old friend) and myself when opening Oro de Calabaza. Beer everywhere and out of a bottle of some 25 ounces, we each only got about 3 ounces when Mt. Saint Helens spent her brew. The ...read more
