Cocoa Loco

Arcadia Brewing Company

American Stout

5.0 by scot have another Cocoa Loco by Arcadia Brewing Company

Poured with barely any head but the little that was there was light brown, had little retention, and almost no lacing. The aroma was cocoa and more cocoa as the name suggests. There was also roasted malt and some coffee/mocha. Taste is up front and in the middle with cocoa and mocha but finishes with a strong alcohol taste and bitterness of the cocoa. Both of these flavors are too strong for me in the finish. Doesn't seem like they really try to hide the alcohol. Not that great of a balanc...read more

Gumball Head

Three Floyds Brewing Company

American Wheat Ale

8.6 by scot have another Gumball Head by Three Floyds Brewing Company

Poured with three fingers of fluffy, white foam that had medium retention and a nice web of lacing throughout. The aroma would never lend itself to a wheat ale: it is full of citrus hops and some wheat. More of an IPA scent than a wheat beer. The flavor isn't as big as the aroma but is definitely more complex than a normal wheat beer. Grapefruit and orange are apparent in the beginning and middle, but finishes like an IPA with piney notes. Very refreshing and light tasting. Summer was ma...read more

In-Heat Wheat

Flying Dog Brewery

Hefeweizen

8.0 by scot have another In-Heat Wheat by Flying Dog Brewery

Poured into my pint glass: had to pour twice and let the first die down some. The retention is on low end of medium, while there is a medium amount of lacing. The aroma is the standard that you expect from a Hefe: clove and some follow up with banana and wheat. The flavor is on the light side, but it starts off with some sweetness and banana, followed by a transition in which it ends with a soft wheat flavor. Medium amount of carbonation and mouth feel. They do a good job of balancing this ...read more

Shiner Smokehaus

Spoetzl Brewery

Wood-Aged Beer

7.0 by scot have another Shiner Smokehaus by Spoetzl Brewery

Poured into a normal pint glass. The medium body foam quickly filled the glass and I had to wait to continue pouring the drink. Head was white with medium retention and a fair amount of lacing. The aroma has sweet malt/grain. There is a slight scent of mesquite but the sweetness is the strongest; although I wouldn't call it an overly strong scent. The flavor starts off with sweet malt, followed by a transition form the malt to mesquite, and ends with the mesquite taking over. I almost thou...read more

Summer Beer

Anchor Brewing

American Wheat Ale

6.0 by scot have another Summer Beer by Anchor Brewing

Poured into a pint glass. Had to pour several times to get entire contents of bottle in the glass due to the thickness and height of the white foam. Good retention and lacing throughout the beer. The aroma is quite full of wheat, some grain, and even a little bit of citrus hints. None of these are overly strong. The taste is some sweet malt, wheat, and I think I sense some butteryness too. The beer seems to have an odd thickness to me in the mouth with a fair amount of carbonation. This b...read more

New Glarus Coffee Stout

American Stout

Poured such a brown thick foam, I had to let the beer settle back twice before emptying the entire bottle into my pint glass. Retention is fair and the head laces the entire glass. Roasted malts, coffee, and chocolate are the aromas that fill the nostrils. The flavor follows the aroma. Coffee and roasted malt are strong here but are well blended together and with a touch of chocolate (cocoa) to give a great glass of goodness. Nice complexity to this one. Very little carbonation that I can ...read more

Cerise

Founders Brewing Company

Fruit Beer

Beer poured with a one finger width of light-pink, fluffy head. It disappeared within a couple of minutes but had some lacing throughout. The aroma is that of cherries. Not an overwhelming scent but more of a refreshing cherry scent. Also the scent of some bready malt. The flavor is of tart cherries. I was a little surprised by the tartness and it lasted throughout the drink, including and after taste of cherry tart. I couldn't distinguish anything on the taste buds. The beer has an medi...read more

Poured straight down the center of my favorite mason jar drinking glass. Had four fingers of fluffy off-white foam, with medium retention, and good lacing throughout the drink. The aroma was sweet caramel malt. It isn't a strong scent but the strongest here. There are some other aromas mixed in there but I had hard time making them out. Some alcohol was in there, maybe even some type of berries - this is for lack of the ability to figure it out. Sorry. The flavor beginning and middle is f...read more

422 Pale Wheat Ale

American Wheat Ale

I picked this beer up because "my guy" at the liquor store said if I liked Oberon from Bells (my favorite), that this was a wheat beer, and there is a good chance I would like this one. So I eagerly bought a sixer (no bombers) and made mental plans to have one over the weekend (I assumed more since I was prepared to session). The beer poured a one finger thick white head, medium retention, but with some but little lacing. The beer looked like it would be light. The aroma was wheat, sweat mal...read more

Summer Beer

Aroma: A fresh aroma that's grainy, grassy, and maybe very faintly sweet. First taste: An initial creamy, buttery, full mouth feel that's very fresh and clean. Overall: Our little tasting group's consensus was this is the beer with the amazingly invisible taste. With the first sip of the brew, I was completely convinced this is another great American Pale Wheat Ale....then the flavor just disappears. I'd love to see the IBU rating, are there any hops in this? It's not that I dislike this seas...read more

Pours two finger thick white foam, with medium retention. Lacing continues up and down the glass as I drank the beer. The aroma is full of wheat. There is also the normal Hef eclove and banana. Definitely has a stronger wheat aroma than most Hefes. The flavor is very wheaty with some following clove and banana. There is a good blend of flavors from beginning to end. The mouthfeel is medium and the carbonation is medium. Overall this beer is quite good. As mentioned, it has more wheat, u...read more

As I poured the beer several hop cones dropped into my glass letting me know, visually, that this beer was going to be hop heaven. The pour had a single finger width of off-white foam, with little retention. The leftover bubbles did lace my glass to the final sip. The first aromas to fill my nostrils were citrus - very fruity and originally very strong. A couple of more sniffs lead to the take over of pine scents. There is also some caramel malts to the aroma. If the taste is anything like...read more
