Poured into a 12 ounce snifter at the Darkness release at the Bavarian lodge. Not much foam in the glass as they tried to give you as much liquid as possible (they should since it is over $.50 and ounce). Aroma was big on citrus hop aroma: grapefruit and orange with a splash of pine. Caramel malt with sweetness was barely there. Pleasant on the sniffer. The taste was sweetness to start before the huge hops offering took over. Grapefruit hops was the strongest but orange and pine were also ...read more

Poured cloudy a became the first beer to fill my 20 oz snifter up with frothy, slightly off-white, sticky foam. So much foam the beer couldn't help but have retention and lacing. Aroma hits me first with citrus hops and a earthiness from the malt (I served around 45 degrees, maybe that had something to do with it). Grapefruit citrus mainly with some hints of pine hops and sweet. Sweet up front on the taste then the rest is all hops. Grapefruit and pine hops throughout. Not a palate killer ...read more

Poured clear into my snifter glass as I wanted to enjoy the aroma that I was anticipating. A finger of off-white foam that didn't stay around long before almost completely disappearing. Lacing is somewhat blotchy. Aroma didn't disappoint. Big, pleasing hop scents that is citrus: combination of orange and grapefruit (more grapefruit than orange). I also get a hit of alcohol. Taste is a little sweet up front but that flavor is gone quickly. From there through the finish the bitterness and g...read more

Poured clear into my pint glass. An inch of brown foam with a fair amount of retention and almost no lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, and slight rye. Taste is pretty much your normal stout with maybe a little more hops in the finish. Rye, I couldn't really detect any. The body is light, medium body with a perfect amount of carbonation. An easy drinking stout that is well balanced. Maybe since I expected more rye I really didn't detect in any aspect of the beer. I would have again. ...read more

Poured clear as I can tell since it is so dark. Had an inch of beautiful, big, brown foam. Retained that head for a good bit so I could enjoy it. Awesome lacing throughout. Aroma is chocolate and roasted malt. Milk/cream add to make the sniffer want to have a chocolate shake. Slight bitter coffee scents too. Taste is sweet with milk/creaminess up front with chocolate and roasted malt in the middle. The finish seems to bring more chocolate and cream while the very end if coffee and some b...read more

Poured hazy with a tan, somewhat frothy foam. Retention was okay and there was some lacing. Aroma is molasses and earthy, almost musty. Taste is sweet, caramel up front. The middle is more earthy through the end and there is some hops but hard to find. Light carbonation and body. I wouldn't say watery or too thin but a light beer. There was something here that didn't agree with me. It seems like they tried to make their own twist on the style but it came up short. EnjoyQ...read more

Poured clear with tan, one finger foam. Retention was okay with some blotchy lacing. Aroma is big on hops. Mainly citrus which I could narrow down to a pleasant orange peal. I am sure there is some roasted malt to give it the dark character but my nose couldn't find it but there is a malt backbone hanging out behind the hops. Taste is caramel and/or toffee up front. The beer also has roasted malt and citrus hops both of which also hang around in the after taste. Light carbonation and ligh...read more

Poured clear with huge tan, frothy foam. Good retentions. Spotty, splotchy lacing. Aroma hits me with alcohol. After the initial blast, there is roasted, toasted, and molasses providing sweet. Dark fruits too. Taste is very sweet up front. Dark fruit in the middle and finish with roasted malt. Not much hops noted. The after taste is fantastic: dark fruit, chocolate, and even a wee bit of alcohol. Good amount of carbonation with big, chewy body. The high alcohol is almost completely ma...read more

Poured clear with a tan, frothy foam. Glorious retention with some quality blotchy lacing. Aroma dough, toasted, and caramel malt, dark fruits, and a hint of citrus and floral hops. Taste of toasted and caramel malt. The middle has hop flavor of citrus and floral. Finishes with some lingering hops and dried fruit. Little bit of hop bitterness in the after taste. A bit of dryness. Low carbonation and medium mouth feel. An interesting take on the style and completely drinkable. The ABV ...read more

This was a 2008 bottle. Poured cloudy with a couple finger tan foam. Retention was average at best with some blotchy lacing. Aroma is big sweet molasses and toffee. Dark fruits, touch of vanilla, and slight cocoa. Taste is sweet molasses up front and transitions to the dark fruits in the finish. A little dark fruit (cherry) aftertaste and slight cocoa. Complex and big. Big beer in the mouth: chewy and coating. Carbonation is light. Dry. Not really as heavy as it seems since it is well...read more

Poured cloudy with some floaties. Nice big white, frothy head. Great retention with minor splotchy lacing. Aroma has citrus hops. Sweet and tart scents. Fruitiness tones are there also. The citrus hops takes the forefront while there is some sweet and a bitter, funk after taste. Somewhat dry on the finish, minor tart too. The combination brings a "smacking" of the lips feeling. Almost no carbonation with a light body. A crisp beer. Sort of a bland beer. It is drinkable but ...read more

Poured clear into a pint glass with more white, frothy, sticky foam than beer. Retention was outstanding with nice sticky spider web lacing throughout. Aroma is beautiful. Citrus (orange and lemon), slight pine, and wonderful floral hops with a kick of sweetness. Taste is sweet up front and then the hops has a hostile take over in a good way. Pine is the main culprit, more so than in the aroma. Floral and citrus hops mingle in and add to a cornucopia of great hop flavors. Pine bitter bite...read more
