Poured into a pint glass on tap having a little bit of brown foam that had no retention or lacing. Aroma was light but it was complex. Coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, and even a little bit of oatmeal/bread. Taste was almost the same as the aroma and like it, slight. Poured clear on tap into a snifter for a nine ounce serving. There was a tiny bit of off white foam that quickly disappeared with no retention. Like most beers in a bar it was served too cold, so I waited for it to warm up some before taking notes. Aroma had sweet, caramel malt with a big grapefruit, citrus hop kick. Also detected some alcohol and as it warmed this got more potent. Definitely have to drink this beer warmer if not the bitterness in the after taste will set you on your butt. ...read more

Poured with a slight haze (not a chill haze as this was out for a while). A two pour size foam that was frothy and white. Retention was awesome and left a real sticky, sheet lacing on the glass. Citrus, yes citrus take the forefront on the sniffer - not overpowering but a pleasant aroma. Sweet caramel hops to balance along with a tinge of rye spiciness (really light). Poured into my snifter as dark as night with a half inch of thick, brown foam. Retention retreated quickly. The little bit that formed an orbit around my glass, lightly created splotchy lacing. Aroma is roasted malt which is definitely the biggest. Also found chocolate, smoke (seemed forced - fake), and some dried fruit which seemed to give a sweet scent. Poured a full finger of brown, thick foam. Lacing was minimal as the foam quickly disappeared from the top of my beer. Aroma is huge on bourbon and alcohol from that bourbon. Other scents after searching: dried fruits, vanilla, molasses, and cocoa. Wonderful blend for the sniffer. Taste is sweet, molasses, and some type of nut up front. Poured clear with a huge amount of off-white, frothy foam. Good amount of retention. Lacing is sticky and throughout. Aroma is big on sweet caramel malt with grassy and citrus hops. Toffee and some earthiness hidden in there also. Sweetness and caramel are in the taste but no where as strong as the aroma. Poured a huge, brown, frothy foam. Nice retention with a quality lacing. Aroma is big on roasted malt. Also scents of dark fruit, chocolate, and coffee. Slight citrus and floral esters. Lot going on. Taste is a very slight sweet sensation before the roasted malt comes to the forefront. Dark fruit, molasses, chocolate, and coffee all add to the complexity of the taste. Poured clear with a nice tan foam. Lots of bubbles rising but the foam quickly dissipated. Some blotchy lacing. Aroma is toasty malt up front and foremost. Slight roastiness. Light hops and fruity esters. Taste of big bread/grain malt. Some toasted malt and, once again, very slight roasted malt. An obvious malt bomb. Poured clear with a beautifully large, white foam. Good retention and some quality lacing. Aroma of sweet malt masquerading behind a huge citrus (grapefruit) hop blast. Hops makes the sniffer happy. To begin the picture on the bottle is evil looking; perfect for the day before Halloween. Poured clear with a slightly off-white, one finger foam. Good staying power with blotchy lacing. Aroma has a sweet and bread malt backbone that is complicated by the orange blossom and hibiscus flower (the only reason I recognize these is because Bryan, the brew master, let me scent these things raw). Had this on tap at brewpub in a snifter glass. Nice brown finger of foam. Retention was minimal before no foam was left. Slight blotchy lacing. Aroma is full of bourbon with spice, oak, molasses, vanilla, and lemon from a spice named cardamom they use. Poured into my snifter with a beautiful one-finger, tan foam. Retention was minimal as it quickly and completely disappeared. No lacing. When the foam was on the beer, it was fine looking.
