Sah'tea

Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales

Sahti

Poured cloudy with a whole bunch of little floaties. Had a huge white, big bubbled foam with low retention for the amount of head. No lacing. Aroma was full of spices: juniper, ginger, and clove. There was sweetness too. Taste started off sweet and quickly changed to a blast of different spices: ginger, clove, juniper, etc. No evidence of the alcohol throughout the drink. Low carbonation and body. Crisp and refreshing. Smooth and easy drinking without any sense of the high alcohol excep...read more

Celebration Ale (2008)

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

American India Pale Ale

Another out of place winter beer during the middle of summer. They were sitting down there in the fridge and I have been putting them off; it was time. Poured slightly cloudy with a huge, white, thick yet fluffy foam. Really good retention and lacing. Aroma is sweet caramel malt and a mellowed pine hops. Still a good scent, I am sure six months ago the pine would even be more intense. Pine hops is subdued as is the over all taste. Some sweet malt to begin, with a light pine hop at the en...read more

Santa's Private Reserve

Rogue Ale Brewery

American Amber/Red Ale

Don't ask why I am drinking this now. I just am. Poured into a tulip glass (just bought, so I had to use it) clear with three inches of off-white, thicker foam. Good retention and lacing. The lacing was stacked in places. The aroma is that of an American IPA: sweet caramel malt and pine hops. Really nice and refreshing scent. Seems like I am ready for a good beer. Taste is just like the aroma: sweet malt up front, smooth middle, ending in pine hops with some mild bitterness. A tad under...read more

Fruit Beer

Pours clear with a nice two finger, white fluffy foam. Some retention but not much. A little bit of lacing. Aroma is full of a lot of sweet fruit. I thought of a fruit salad with a beer thrown on top of it. Not one fruit, not citrus, but a cornucopia of sweet fruit. Seems to be some grainy or bready malt to boot. Taste is fruit and bready malt. The fruit I really can't make out again in terms of single or a couple of fruits. Mildly carbonated, light mouth feel, with it seeming to be a l...read more

Commodore Perry

Great Lakes Brewing Company

American India Pale Ale

6.0 by scot have another Commodore Perry by Great Lakes Brewing Company

Poured clear with a big, white, fluffy foam. Fair amount of retention and some lacing. I was expecting an amber color. Aroma is of bready malt with a touch of sweet caramel malt. Malt scents are balanced by citrus hops. The taste starts off with bready, grainy malts. Finishes with citrus, grapefruit hops. Some bitterness that lingers. Light carbonation and mouthfeel with slight oiliness. Good but not great. Has a little twist: big bready malt both on the nose and palate. This isn't so...read more

Sir Duluth Oatmeal Stout

Oatmeal Stout

Poured into my pint glass. So dark couldn't tell if it was clear or not. About a finger of brown foam that became just a thin film on the top. Some lacing. Aroma is what you expect: roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate with some hidden nuttiness. Taste follows the aroma: roasted malts, mild coffee, and a big hit of chocolate in the finish. Not creamy. Big carbonation with a medium body. Probably too much carbonation for the style and a notch below a pop. This is my third beer tonight and...read more

Cabin Fever

New Holland Brewing Company

American Brown Ale

5.0 by scot have another Cabin Fever by New Holland Brewing Company

Poured clear into a pint glass with one finger of tan colored, small-bubbled foam. Foam quickly retreated to form a thin film on the top of the beer. Little lacing. Aroma is sweet with roasted malt. Dark fruity esters similar raisins or prunes. Roasted malt up front followed in the middle by syrupy sweetness, while finishing with those dark fruits but the fruits are mildly sour. Aftertaste is just a little sour. Lots of carbonation and medium mouth feel. Almost too much carbonation for m...read more

Hook & Ladder Backdraft Brown

Hook & Ladder Brewing Company

English Brown Ale

7.0 by scot have another Hook & Ladder Backdraft Brown by Hook & Ladder Brewing Company

Poured clear with a big, fluffy, off-white foam. Retention was medium at best with some lacing. Beautiful, big sweet caramel malt on the nose. There is some grain and nutty malt aromas also. No hops detected. Taste begins with caramel malt transitioning to roasted malt in the middle, while finishing with a touch of coffee and bitterness. Medium mouth feel and a big carbonation presence with a slight creaminess. This doesn't do any ground breaking in the style but it is a solid brew. I c...read more

Oscar's Chocolate Oatmeal Stout

Oatmeal Stout

Poured clear with a single finger of tan foam that lasted seconds before completely disappearing. Minor lacing. Lots of roasted malt on the nose. Some chocolate, mild coffee, and a hint of earthiness (hops). Roasted malt up front, the middle follows with some chocolate and small coffee, finishes with more chocolate and nice creaminess. Creamy and medium carbonation. Good mouth feel. A touch on the thin side. Not an amazing stout, just a quality stout. Might be a little too much carbonat...read more

Cherry Stout

Fruit Beer

Poured clear, as far as I could tell. Had minimal brown colored foam that quickly disappeared. The little bit of foam around the ring did leave some lacing. Roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate are the strongest aromas. Slight cherries noticeable too. Holy mackerel, I didn't expect that! Roasted malt to begin, with a middle of huge, face twisting cherry sourness that quickly retreats and finishes with coffee and chocolate bitterness. What a rush of sensations, especially the cherry. 90 Minute IPA

Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales

Imperial/Double India Pale Ale

9.0 by scot have another 90 Minute IPA by Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales

Poured clear and could only get about two-thirds of the beer in my glass before the thick, white foam started to ooze over. Good retention and okay lacing. Nose is full of a balance between caramel malt and citrus/grapefruit and floral hops. Clean and refreshing aroma. If the taste follows, it will be damn good. For an imperial a very nice balance between the sweet malt and hops. The malt sweetness starts the beer and it finishes with citrus and floral hops. Not much bitterness or hop aft...read more

Riverwest Stein Beer

American Amber Lager

Poured clear with a fluffy, off-white, three-finger head. Foam didn't last long for the thickness of it and not much lacing to speak of. Aroma has malt the size of a five gallon hat. Both sweet and earthy malt. Not much else there for me. Maybe a tiny bit of fruit. Big malt backbone to the taste, mostly sweet with a touch of earthiness. Small fruit in the middle along with the malt, finishing with more malt and some hop bitterness. Slight malt earthiness aftertaste. Medium carbonation w...read more
