R&D Golden Pale Ale

New Glarus Brewing Company

Belgian Pale Ale

Aroma: Mellow floral hoppiness. And a little pepper, lemon. 1st Taste: We have smell and taste match. Medium mouthfeel and solid level of carbonation. Overall: Start out drinking it too cold, it's an American thing. And, the 7% ABV is totally masked. I have yet to find a New Glarus that is anything but a well crafted execution of the style of the particular brew. I don't want to come off as a fawning groupie, but these dudes take their brewing as serious ass stuff. Lot's of flavors like a farm...read more

Belgian Pale Ale

Pours clear with three fingers of thick, off-white foam. Good retention and great lacing throughout the beverage. Floral hops and sweet malt fill the scent. Minor aroma of citrus (lemon) and sweet tarts. The beer has a little metallic taste that doesn't seem well placed. Floral hops are there on the finish - very floral. The sweet malt and the sweet tart taste are very strong at the start. Medium body and carbonation. Might have had this one a little to cold to start. After the initial...read more

Picnic Ants

O'so Brewing Company

Saison

Aroma: Rough farmhouse smell of musty wheat/yeast and slight floral/spice. Not perfect, but to be fair within style requirements. 1st Taste: Lot's of flavors all at once. It's the stuff it should be (wheat, citrus, floral, spice), bit a tad overwhelming. Very full, and slight buttery mouthfeel and a slightly sour finish. Overall, the aroma throws me off on this beer. I can't put my finger (or better stated, my nose) on what it is, I think it's probably an overly aromatic yeast I not familar wi...read more

Poured cloudy with two fingers of medium thick white foam. The two fingers took a few minutes to gradually shrink down to a white, bubbly foam over the top of the beer. Some lacing but not of the spider web variety, more blotchy. Aroma takes on earthy wheat and clove with first attempt. Going back for more I pick up fruit and some floral notes. As the beer warms I get more earthiness. Starts off with wheat and citrus, transitions to the clove that was abundant in the aroma. Finishes sour ...read more

Sweetwater Georgia Brown

Sweetwater Brewing Company

American Brown Ale

Poured into my pint glass clear with a finger width of white foam. The foam faded quickly to a thin matte that actually provided a thin web of lacing. The aroma was of malt sweetness with some caramel and molasses (brown sugar) notes. Hidden in there is some nuttiness too. The flavor is up front with the sweet malt, which I like. There is also the traits of the nose: brown sugar, caramel, and nuttiness. It seems to come full circle and finish off with the sweet malt. Medium carbonation ...read more

Shiner Kosmos Reserve

Spoetzl Brewery

American Lite Lager

"This full-flavored, hop-jacked lager..." right on the bottle. After reading this on the label, I decided that this would be the beer of the night and out of the refrigerator it emerged with me. Poured clear, single finger of white foam, little retention and really no lacing. Based on the side of the bottle I expected to smell some hops, but I detected none. Instead I had scents of malt, yeast, fruit, and a wee bit of sourness. My palate found similar flavors as my nose found aroma. Maltin...read more

3rd Anniversary Ale

Port Brewing Company

Imperial/Double India Pale Ale

Poured cloudy with almost no foam, no retention, or lacing. Grapefruit and citrus are very strong on the nose. There is also a faint aroma of caramel sweet malt. At one time I even detected some alcohol. Loaded with grapefruit and citrus hops on the palate, maybe some caramel malt up front that makes this beer very sweet. But the sweetness quickly vanishes for the grapefruit hops that is also at the other end an unchecked. Medium mouth feel and lots o' carbonation. I don't mind carbonation in ...read more

Blackheart

English India Pale Ale

Two finger, off-white foamy head. Clear to the eye. The aroma is piney hops (more so when cold), oak, alcohol, caramel sweet malt, vanilla. All over the place adding the complexity and the appreciation of this beer. Each time I went back for another scent, there was more. Very interesting. The beer starts off with caramel/sweet malt and some vanilla and transitions to oak, finishing with alcohol. The alcohol might be too much, but seems to find its place. Big mouth feel almost creamy, no...read more

"So Hoppy that it threatens to remove the enamel from one's teeth." That's what Lagunitas says about this beer on their site. I popped the cap and believed I was in for some hop goodness. Pours clear with multiple pours because of the height of the white, foamy head. Nice retention and spider web lacing throughout. I had to sniff the open bottle before it even made it to my glass. Oh, my nose loves the. Piney hops abound. Some sweet malt too but very light. Oh my is this some hoppy go...read more

Summer Honey

Big Sky Brewing Company

American Pale Ale

6.0 by rich have another Summer Honey by Big Sky Brewing Company

Aroma: Honey and light malt. 1st Taste: Fresh, honey, light toasty malt. Overall: It's a good honest beer from Big Sky country. Tastes clean and fresh, in my mind the influence of the glacial, mountain water used to brew this beer. I'm not sure I'm a fan of honey in brews, there's a sweetness that's close to my limit. But, it has a light touch, no fault in the after taste, and is thirst quenching. I don't think Big Sky Brewing Co has a huge distribution footprint, and this brew is a seasonal, ...read more

Poured into my favorite mason mug with a finger of white foam. Little retention and no lacing to mention. Upon my first sniff of the beer, if I was a bear I would dive into this beer as it is full of that sweet nectar called honey. Pooh bear! The aroma also has some grassy scents. Lots 'o sweet, followed by some malt and bready malt. The beer finishes with something that I can't quite put my finger on. A medium body and carbonation give it a crispness and refreshing taste. Opening the first of three bombers I got while visiting the Three Floyds bar and pub. Number four didn't make it as it exploded in the back of the van, but that story has been told. Beer pours a gold and clear, with almost no foam. No retention but the thin line did have a little bit of lacing. Nothing great. Big contingent of malt on the nose (breadiness) with some yeast. The flavor follows the aroma. More malt with sweetness and breadiness. There is also a herbal/spiciness to both the ...read more
