Typically defined by malty sweetness with caramel or toffee aroma and taste. Also, typical are notes of alcohol and fruitiness. Americanization of the style can be more hop-forward and bitter than the english style. Color ranges from amber/brown to deeper orange/red/copper. These are strong beers that usually can be cellared. Any sherry or port like attributes from oxidation may be considered positive when balanced with the overall flavor profile.
