Crystal was bred at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon by Dr. Alfred Haunoid in 1983. A cross between a tetraploid Hallertau and male USDA 21381M, with pedigree of Cascade, Brewers Gold and Early Green.
Four other hops came out of the breeding program, making Crystal a half-sister of Liberty, Ultra and Mount Hood.
The focus of the breeding program was to make German noble substitutes that were expensive to bring over and earlier farming had little success. Crystal is an American replacement of Hallertau.
