Baltic Porter

Baltic Porter is a rich, cold-fermented dark beer style that originated from 18th-century English porters and Russian Imperial Stouts, later adapted by countries bordering the Baltic Sea.

Notes: A Baltic Porter often has the malt flavors reminiscent of an English porter and the restrained roast of a schwarzbier, but with a higher OG and alcohol content than either. Very complex, with multi-layered malt and dark fruit flavors.

Flavor Profiles

Malt Profile:

Malt sweetness is medium-low to medium-high. Distinctive malt aromas and flavors of caramelized sugars, dark sugars, and dried fruits are present. Roast malt attributes may be present at low levels, but any bitterness or astringency should be in harmony with other flavor aspects.

Hop Profile:

Very low. Floral hop aroma can complement aromatics.

Fermentation Character:

Due to its alcoholic strength, there may be very low to low levels of complex alcohol aromas and flavors, and higher levels of fruitiness suggestive of berries, grapes, or plums, but not banana. Fruity esters, DMS, and diacetyl should not be present.
