  • Finished rating Spotted Cow and then having a second and decided to go for Black Wheat. Why? I put the beers in the fridge in the order I wanted to try them: from what I thought I would like least to the most. Firm believer in saving the best for last. I just hope that my review isn't tainted by the fact that I am not expecting much here.

Pours with an eighth of an inch of brown foam with no retention or lacing to speak of. The aroma has strong wheat, chocolate malt, and some coffee. I actually enjoyed this scent and went back for multiple servings.

Thank God for New Glarus. This isn't what I was expecting and why, why did I only pick up one of these? The taste starts off with wheat which quickly changes to a nice chocolate malt. I might even get the hints of the roasted caramel and some coffee.

The beer is highly carbonated, crisp, and clean all adding to great drinkability of this beer (like usual wheat beers). If I had more, there is a good chance I could session this beer. One "dark" beer that I could be refreshed by even in the summer time; as I was today.

Note: this is a winter seasonal beer for New Glarus, so this could have been sitting around for while and might have blemished the review.
