Aroma: Chocolate malt, very low roast. Almost caught fruit notes.
1st Taste: Sweet and roasted malt, a tad thin.
Overall: I vacation in SW Michigan and have been to Round Barn Winery, a couple of years ago....pre brewery. These folks have been making fermented beverages out of practically everything that grows in this heavy veg/fruit farming area. I am biased towards their success in their new brewing adventure. The beer was good. A little on the sift side of stout, but nothing wrong. On tap at a pub, could drink this quite a while.
Poured opaque with a half inch of tan foam. Retention is minimal as is the lacing.
Aroma is lactose sweet, chocolate, oat, and some coffee. Pleasant on the sniffer but at times can be shallow.
Taste is predominately chocolate malt with bitterness from the chocolate. Sweetness seems to come mainly from the lactose while there is a minor roasted, coffee, and oat flavors.
Medium body with ample carbonation. I would even go a far as calling it a little thin to watery but after drinking a lot of big beers, a normal stout doesn't feel that big.
The taste has more of a presence than the nose helping to take this beer up a notch or so. A good beer from a new entry into the craft beer scene. A couple wouldn't hurt. Enjoy!
