Bred at the legendary Wye College in England during the late 1950s and early 1960s, Alliance (designated in archival records as USDA 66050) was initially engineered as a potential high-performance replacement for the venerable Fuggle hop. This traditional British variety was born from a cross between the robust Whitbread Golding Variety (WGV) and an experimental C3 male selection, which itself carried a genetic lineage derived from a sister of Brewer's Gold. Despite its promising pedigree, Alliance was ultimately deemed a commercial failure in the United Kingdom after demonstrating slightly lower and more erratic yields than the very Fuggle bines it was meant to improve upon. The variety faced similar agronomic challenges during trial testing in United States plots, preventing it from ever establishing a stable commercial foothold. Consequently, it is no longer grown at a commercial scale anywhere today, surviving primarily as a prized archival footnote in hop germplasm repositories for historians and specialty heritage brewers.

The sensory footprint of Alliance delivers a classical, beautifully understated British noble aromatic profile that anchors a brew in authentic, mid-century English garden characteristics. The aromatic layout leads with a comforting, deeply rustic foundation of damp autumn soil, sweet herbal kitchen spices, and fine, dried wood shavings. This deeply grounded botanical canvas is cleanly elevated across the palate by soft, delicate top notes of mild meadow flowers and a faint, whispering touch of orchard fruits. Completely devoid of the high-intensity, punchy citrus or tropical oil fractions found in modern craft hybrids, Alliance provides a remarkably smooth, soft-spoken, and nostalgic presence in the glass. When utilized in classic hot-side or late-kettle additions, its balanced oil matrix contributes a clean, gentle bitterness and a rounded, herbal finish that flawlessly flatters delicate, malt-forward historical recipes.

Substitution Tip

If you can't find Alliance, the best alternatives are East Kent Golding, Fuggle, Progress, or Whitbread Golding.
