Dr. Rudi was bred by HortResearch as a an open cross of Smoothcone. Released in 1976.

Originally named Super Alpha but renamed in 2012 in honor of the "father of New Zealand hops", Dr. Rudi Roborgh.

There isn't a direct substitute.
