Zenia Hops
Dual: Aroma and BitteringAlpha 11.0 - 14.0%United States
Zenia is a proprietary, "New Wave" processing variant created by intentionally shifting the traditional harvest window and curing parameters of classic Columbus/Tomahawk/Zeus (CTZ) fields. Cultivated in Minnesota by the former farmer-owned operation Mighty Axe Hops, this rare variety serves as a fascinating testament to the power of regional terroir and highly specialized post-harvest processing. While its DNA belongs to the legendary CTZ family, Zenia was intentionally harvested late and then allowed to age in highly controlled, specialized resting environments. This deliberate curation period was engineered to minimize the intense green, pungent herbal attributes and sharp, sulfurous notes typically expected from standard American bittering bines. By letting those harsh traits fade away, the process unlocked an expressively sweet, dense fruit profile with massive essential oil concentrations, offering brewers a unique regional pathway to intense tropical depth without relying on traditional Pacific Northwest proprietary cultivars. Following the closure of Mighty Axe Hops in 2020, this unique domestic variant has become exceptionally difficult to source, remaining a highly prized time capsule of Midwestern hop innovation.
The sensory architecture of Zenia is an intense, heavy, and deeply saturated masterpiece that beautifully bridges the gap between old-school American "dank" characteristics and modern, fruit-forward craft intensity. The bouquet opens aggressively with an unashamedly rich, sweet melody of thick orange marmalade, vibrant citrus oils, and jammy apricot top notes. This massive fruit-forward punch is seamlessly balanced across the palate by a heavy, comforting background tier of sticky pine resin and a clean, deep dankness. Most notably, Zenia completely lacks the sharp, savory onion or garlic undertones that often plague standard late-harvest CTZ lots. Thanks to its robust alpha-acid foundation and a uniquely altered essential oil distribution, it contributes a remarkably smooth, velvety bittering base when added early, but truly commands the spotlight in late-kettle, whirlpool, or dry-hop additions where its succulent marmalade and clean resinous saturation can completely coat the palate.
If you can't find Zenia, the best alternatives are Amarilllo, Apollo™, Chinook, Columbus, or Zeus.
